'Editor' Brendan launches his manifesto for better city

Jul 17 2006

Liverpool Echo

Comedian Brendan Riley, ECHO editor for the day

COMEDIAN Brendan Riley came out fighting for the city of Liverpool today as he took control of the ECHO.

The former mechanic and comedy craftsman launched his manifesto to make Liverpool a better place as he grasped the paper's editorial reins this morning.

Riley, 39, appearing in the fifth Liverpool Comedy Festival, is one of the city's top comics invited to take the hot seat and decide on the content of the paper.

One of his priorities soon became clear - to re-name Liverpool's historic Lime Street Station after Ringo Starr.

He explained: "It needs to be renamed as Ringo Starr-tion.

"We've done the airport, and now people arriving by train should get the Beatle feel right away.

"It's got to be Ringo because of Thomas the tank engine, of course."

But he also has a serious message. He said: "I want to start a campaign called Tidy Town because Liverpool is particularly bad."

Riley's solution? Enlist the help of footballers like Steven Gerrard and Duncan Ferguson to get the message across.

"Let's face it, if Duncan Ferguson told you to pick the crisp packet up, you would, wouldn't you?"

* You can catch Brendan doing his stand-up routine as part of the Liverpool 3 show in Baby Blue at 9pm on Wednesday. Ticket information, 0870 2026 6339.
