The trams are dead, long live the train

Merseytravel plans to buy more trains, build a new station at Kirkby and modernise Central and Lime Street stations

TRANSPORT officials want to buy more trains and build a newstation at Kirkby under a multi-million pound blueprint to replace Merseytram.

They also plan to completely modernise Central station, set up a park-and-ride scheme at Gillmoss and redevelop Kirkby bus station to preparefor Everton FC'spossible move to the town.

Ultra-strict "red route" parking rules could be brought in to unclog traffic jams on busy streets between Liverpool and Kirkby, strictly monitored by CCTV cameras.

When the government axed the tram scheme last year, ministers said millions of pounds were still on the table for "the right schemes" in Merseyside.

Merseytravel has unveiled the projects it wants to set up between now and 2011 to replace Line One, from the city centre to Kirkby.

The proposals will now be sent to the government - with an immediate demand for £4.5m to start improvements at Central and Lime Street stations.

Merseytravel chairman Mark Dowd said: "The government did not want the tram and made sure we did not get it.

"I do not think this plan is just the best of a bad job - we are being pragmatic. We have got to alter the transport system from Liverpool to Kirkby."

Merseytravel has not given up on the tram, and can still legally build it until 2010 if it gets the money.
