Sewer flood misery may soon be a bad memory

THE misery of sewer flooding in parts of Sefton may be a bad memory under plans to build a new pumping station.

For decades the Waterloo area has been blighted by sewer flooding during heavy rains, causing significant damage to homes.

Now Sefton council's planning committee has granted permission for United Utilities to build a new pumping facility near Westward View, off Holden Road.

It will replace a temporary pumping station installed on the same site in 2001 and the majority of machinery, including a large tank, will be hidden underground.

During construction, marram grass and topsoils will be carefully excavated and stored then replanted when work is finished.

Cllr Ian Moncur, chairman of Sefton's planning committee, said: "We hope this scheme will end flooding problems in this area. This is great news for residents who have really suffered over the years.

"At the same time, a lot of thought has gone into ensuring the pumping station has the least possible impact on this popular coastal area."
