A MULTI-million pound plan to transform a near-derelict Liverpool estate is in chaos today after Tesco pulled out of the scheme.

Hundreds of families moved out of the Gillmoss estate, off the East Lancs Road, leaving just a few streets still occupied, to makeway for regeneration including a superstore, new homes and shops.

But the scheme repeatedly stalled, leaving those still living there marooned by dereliction and vandalism.

Now the ECHO has learned Tesco has pulled out of building on land occupied by four boarded-up streets in Gill-moss.

Today Croxteth councillor Rose Bailey said locals were in shock at the decision.

She said: "It took six years to get to this point and people have been living in hell for most of that time."

Some believe the firm wants to concentrate instead on becoming part of a proposed stadium development for Everton FC in nearby Kirkby.
