Sally the motoring macaw is back at safari park

Aug 4 2006

Daily Post, Liverpool Echo

Sally the macaw has flown the nest at Knowsley Safari Park

KNOWSLEY Safari Park's renowned driving parrot, Sally, is back behind the wheel of her car after going missing for more than a week.

The motoring macaw, who talks and drives a miniature car as part of the park's exotic bird show, caused concern when she flew the nest.

She was found by Knowsley couple Amanda Stothard and Tom Warrilow who returned the 16-year-old blue and gold bird after reading about her disappearance in the Daily Post.

Ms Stothard said: "Tom and I had heard this unusual squawking sound on and off for about 24 hours before we realised that there was a macaw in the tree opposite our house.

"We have a parrot ourselves so Tom went across the road with some seed and Sally flew right down on to his arm and ate for about 10 minutes. She must have been really hungry, poor thing."

The couple made sure Sally got the best care, even buying her a cage and taking her to a vet for a check-up.

They had already started to advertise to try and find the bird's owner when they saw the safari park's appeal for news of Sally's whereabouts.

Safari park general manager David Ross said Sally had always had an independent streak.

He said: "She's flown away several times before but has always come back after a day or two. This time, after she'd been missing for a week, we were getting concerned for her safety."

Ms Stothard and Mr Warrilow have received a reward from the safari park as well as season tickets to the attraction so they can visit Sally as often as they want.
