60s pop/rock legend Arthur Lee playing with his band, Love, at the Liverpool Summer Pops

IT MAY be an unlikely if remarkable connection.

But the Liverpool music scene is in especial mourning after the death of Arthur Lee, a legend of the Californian psychedelic scene of the 1960s.

Lee, who with his band Love recorded one of the most influential rock albums of all time, Forever Changes, in 1967 has died, aged 61, of acute myeloid leukaemia in Tennessee.

But his heart always remained with Liverpool and its musicians, who kick-started his flagging career 25 years after his band's masterpiece reflected the darker side of the Summer of Love.

It was May, 1992, when, after years in the doldrums coping with personal problems, he was persuaded to the stage for a concert at the Liverpool Academy backed by Liverpool band Shack.

It proved to be a magical night captured on a live album and which subsequently propelled his music back into the spotlight to a whole new generation of fans.

Years afterwards, Lee himself confirmed: "The show in Liverpool is still the most memorable in my life. The warmth and love of the people there is something I shall never forget.

"Not only did they know all my songs, they also sang them aloud as I played. I think they knew them better than I did. They really made me feel welcome - I was so well liked there.

"I would like to thank the people of Liverpool for all their warmth and their love."
