Carnage on M62

Aug 9 2006

By Michelle Fiddler, Liverpool Echo

The scene at the seven-car pile-up on the M62

A MAN died after a horror crash reduced cars to a mass of twisted metal strewn across the M62.

The 25-year-old driver suffered serious head injuries in the eight vehicle pile-up, which included an HGV and a flatbed truck.

Firefighters spent 90 minutes cutting him free from his red Nissan Micra before ambulance crews rushed him to Whiston hospital.

It is believed the car was crushed between the truck and the lorry in the pile-up.

Surgeons battled to save the Liverpool man, but he died yesterday evening. His name was not released by the emergency services.

Paramedic Peter Kent, one of the first men on the scene of the crash near the Huyton turnoff, said the other motorists must have had a "guardian angel" to walk away from the carnage.

He said: "When I looked at the Astra, which was totally wrecked, I couldn't believe that they walked away with just scrapes, bumps and bruises.
