LIVERPOOL MP Peter Kilfoyle, 60, has had a quadruple by pass operation after suffering a major heart attack.
The Labour member for Walton drove himself to the Royal Liverpool hospital after suffering chest pains at home.
He was transferred to Broadgreen hospital's acute cardiac unit for the operation. Today the firebrand MP was recovering at home, but plans to return to mainstream politics.
Speaking for the first time about his ordeal, he told the ECHO: "It took me completely by surprise. I am middle-aged and some have said I'm overweight, but I have had an active life and I didn't expect this to happen.
"A few Saturdays ago I was settling down to watch the footie with my wife when I felt this massive pain across my chest.
"At first I thought it was severe indigestion but then realised it could be something worse. Just to be sure I drove myself to the Royal. They kept me in and ordered tests.
"They transferred me to Broadgreen where I was told that I had had a serious heart attack. They let me go home for a day or so and then two weeks ago today I had a quadruple bypass."
