THE man behind a website that has whipped council officials into a frenzy yesterday closed down the site.
Rumours and gossip about senior officers' dealings have been posted almost daily on the blog, called Liverpool-Evil-Cabal, prompting the council to ban its staff from accessing it.
After 80,000 people logged on to read the accusations over high-level deals, chief executive Colin Hilton brought in police to investigate but the force insisted no law had been broken.
But the site's author, "Tony Parish", who lists his occupation as "whistle-blower" yesterday revealed the blog had achieved his aim and would shut down at 6pm.
His final entry read: "The blog is signing off for the moment, for reasons which will soon become obvious and public.
"We have been promised that there will now be a proper investigation into the allegations which have been made on this blog.
"As you know, the evidence has already been presented to the new chief executive of Liverpool City Council, Mr Colin Hilton.
"This is a magnificent victory for freedom of speech and for truth, justice and democracy.
"The blog still has a lot more to tell you.
"And, unless we see the promises kept, with decisive and proper action being taken within the next few days, we will be back. Bigger and better than ever."
