THE chairman of the campaign to bring an elected mayor to Liverpool last night called for a full investigation into allegations made by a controversial website.
The Liverpool Evil Cabal blog levelled a number of accusations at senior council officials over business dealings as well as being critical of the council's approach to Capital of Culture.
More than 80,000 hits were recorded on the site and yesterday it was mentioned on a number of internet news sites following its closure on Sunday night.
Now Liam Fogarty, chairman of A Mayor for Liverpool, which wants a major overhaul of the city's administration, demanded an independent inquiry be held into the allegations.
He said: "The website's serious and detailed allegations need to be properly investigated by independent outsiders.
" There are official mechanisms for dealing with allegations of this type. This is a job for the District Auditor and possibly the police. There may also be issues for the Standards Board to examine.
"It is not acceptable for Liverpool City Council to investigate itself in these circumstances.
"Thousands of Liverpudlians have read the blogger's allegations. Now we deserve straight answers to the questions raised by the website. The site and its claims have been the talk of the town for months. So far, the council's response has been to try to close down the site and threaten its author."
No one from the city council was available to comment.
