THE comedy musical Brick Up The Mersey Tunnels is breaking all box office records at the Royal Court theatre, making it one of the biggest selling home grown new productions of modern times.
Long queues have been stretching past St John's Centre and more than 100 people an hour have been trying to get through to box office phones, say theatre management.
The comedy musical, starring local actors Andrew Schofield, Ethne Brown and Suzanne Collins and which tells the story of a campaign to prevent Wirralians coming into Liverpool by blocking the Tunnels and blowing up the Runcorn Bridge, opened on Thursday, August 4.
"I have never seen a show sell like this in my life." said Royal Court marketing manager Iain Christie. "We expected the queues to die down after the first week but every day we get more and more people booking. There are people who are booking to see the show for the fifth or sixth time and it has only been running for two weeks!"
"What's amazing is that most theatres go dark at this time of the year because traditionally it's looked on as a slack time. This has proved that the right production can counter that."
Theatre chief executive Kevin Fearon added: "When I read the script three years ago I believed that there would be an audience for it but I've been delighted by the way that it has been received by public and press alike."
The play by local writers Dave Kirby and Nicky Allt finishes on Saturday August 26 and all tickets are selling fast. The run will not be extended due to previous commitments of cast and crew. There are already plans, however, to bring the show back next summer.
