A FAMILY from Liverpool have struck gold on the beaches of North Wales - courtesy of some passing whales.

Ambergris, the valuable whale vomit - fondly known as floating gold - was recently found at Rhos on Sea and Shell Island.

Yesterday, two more people came forward to say they too had discovered ambergris on the region's sands.

The latest finds could be worth around £2,000 - and lead to a gold rush among would-be beachcombers.

The whale vomit is used to produce perfume and can fetch more than £10 a gram.

Rarely recovered on British shores, ambergris is usually found on the coasts of the United States and Australia.

But yesterday's discoveries took the total ambergris finds in North Wales recent weeks to four.

Mick Dunn, of Tuebrook, Liverpool, was staying at a Towyn caravan park with wife Sandra and their children Mitchell, seven, 10-year-old Ged and their cousin Ian Clarke, six.

He realised the youngsters had stumbled across ambergris after reading about the latest find in the Daily Post.
