THE Catholic church came under fire last night from a mother whose daughter was baptised secretly and without her consent.
Mellissa Makhaba from Wirral said her five-year-old daughter Corinne had been staying with her grandmother who organised the christening in secret.
Ms Makhaba said she was furious when she discovered what had happened behind her back and had contacted a solicitor about limiting the grandmother’s access to her daughter.
She said: “I was livid when I found out – with the church and with Corinne’s grandmother.
“It was her father’s mother who got her baptised behind my back. None of my family were there, but even that’s not the point.
“Corinne wasn’t even living with them. She is under my care, she lives with me. I spoke to a solicitor about what had happened and he said he had never heard of anything like that happening.
“I had never spoken to her about getting Corinne baptised, nor had her father and I discussed it.”
Corinne, who is in the first year of the Catholic primary school St Peter and Paul’s in New Brighton, spends Wednesday nights with her father and stayed over because of the summer holidays.
Ms Makhaba said her ex-partner, Corinne’s father Michael, was at the service: “He told me his mum arranged it and he just went on the day.
“Her dad had picked her up, and her white dress and shoes were already bought so it must have been arranged for weeks. You can’t just turn up for something like that.
“Corrine told me she had said she didn’t want to go but her dad had said it would make her nanny happy.”
