A NEW equestrian centre has opened its doors in the horse owners' capital of the UK - Wirral.
Horse enthusiast Elizabeth McElney saw an urgent need for the centre in Wirral, where there are more horse owners than any other part of the UK, offering a full livery service, riding lessons and grazing facilities.
After three years of negotiations and research she managed to obtain planning permission from her local council to build stables on a piece of overgrown land in Leasowe and then raised the funds to develop it.
With funding from Merseyside Special Investment Fund( MSIF) the Leasowe Equestrian Centre finally opened its doors to the public this week. Situated at a beach location, the centre offers 16 acres of unspoilt greenbelt land with stabling accommodation and grazing facilities.
Ms McElney said: "There are more horse owners in Wirral than any other part of the UK. I have already been inundated with requests from people wanting a secure, spacious environment in which their horses can be fed and cared for by professionals.
"The service we offer includes mucking out, feeding, grooming and exercising. Our location, close to the beach, is ideal."
The investment manager at MSIF's Small Firms Fund, Carol Bolland said: "Ms McElney is passionate about this project and has thrown her heart and soul into getting it off the ground. She is experienced with horses and has identified a genuine market demand for her services."
