One man died and another was left critically injured after an apparent collision with a vehicle which then left the scene, police have said.
Officers were called to Quarry Road in Maidstone, Kent, at around 7pm on Sunday where they discovered the two badly wounded men. One later died, while the other is in a critical condition in hospital.
Kent Police said it was trying to trace the vehicle involved, thought to be a Land Rover, and added that a witness also heard what they thought was a gunshot in the area.
A force spokesman described the incident as "serious", but could not give any more details.
Kent Police said: "Police were called just before 7pm...after reports that two men had been involved in a collision with a vehicle and had serious injuries.
"It has been confirmed one of the men received fatal injuries and the other is being treated in hospital with life-threatening injuries.
"The vehicle, believed to be a Land Rover, left the scene without stopping and police are making inquiries to trace it.
"A witness also reported hearing what they believed to be a gunshot in the area and this is being investigated."
The force added: "We appreciate this incident may have caused some alarm but would like to reassure members of the local community that police are carrying out a number of inquiries in the area and are also keen to speak to anyone who witnessed the incident or the moments leading up to it."
