Gee Walker: I forgive them

Nov 30 2005

By Mary Murtagh & Sarah Chapman, Liverpool Echo

Anthony Walker's mother, Gee

ANTHONY Walker's family today forgave the thugs who murdered their son.

Gee Walker fought back tears as she overcame the urge to hate Paul Taylor and Michael Barton.

The practising Christian said she now hoped the murderers would be able to forgive themselves.

She said: "I can't hate. We're a forgiving family and it extended to outside, so it wasn't hard to forgive because we don't just preach it, we practise it.

"I brought up my children in this church to love. I teach them to love, to respect themselves, and respect others.

"What does bitterness do? It eats you up inside, it's like a cancer. We don't want to serve a life sentence with those people."

Mrs Walker sat strong in court throughout the whole case.

She remained in her seat as medical experts described in gruesome detail how Anthony was killed by an ice axe blow to the head.

She wore a locket with the picture of her 18-year-old son as Michael Barton was convicted of the killing.

Her daughter Dominique gave her strength throughout the worst moments of the trial.

The 20-year-old shared classrooms and school photographs with Paul Taylor, the man who was to strike the murderous blow to her brother's head.

She also forgave the killers.
