A DOG owner could be jailed after his pit bull savaged two young girls in Liverpool.

Denis Bowker was slammed by district judge Michael Ableson after admitting his pet attacked nine-year-old Nikkita Douglas and pal Marnie McKenzie, 12, as they played in Norris Green.

Judge Ableson backed the ECHO's Biteback campaign to crack down on terror dogs after hearing how the two girls were savaged.

Bowker, 56, of Norris Green Crescent, was charged under the Dangerous Dogs Act for allowing his pet to injure someone while out of control in a public place.

Liverpool magistrates court heard Nikkita suffered serious leg wounds after being bitten on May 29.

The Everton FC academy player spent a week in hospital and had a skin graft. She now faces regular check-ups.

The children were playing football near their homes in Norris Green Crescent when the pit bull chased Marnie into her home after attacking Nikkita.

Damian Webb, prosecuting, said: "Nikkita's father came to her assistance and the defend-ant's son also helped haul the dog off.
