ECHO readers have flooded our phone lines with support for our fightback against thugs with dangerous dogs.

The Biteback campaign is calling for tough new laws and bigger penalties for yobs who set their animals on other pets for sport or allowthem to attack people in the street.

Home Secretary John Reid has agreed to consider changing the law - if there is enough evidence that the problem is on the increase.

ECHO readers from across Merseyside are sending aclear message to Dr Reid that the current system is not working.

Mark Johnson, of Stoneycroft, said: "As the owner of two Staffordshire bull terriers, I think the owner should be held responsible, not the dog.

"I witnessed a 12-year-old walking along Kensington high street with what appeared to be a pit bull terrier off the lead. I think this is ridiculous and should be clamped down on."

Irene Davis, of Bootle, said: "I had a Staffordshire bull terrier of 16 years and he was scared of cats and pigeons.

If he came across other dogs,he would lie on his back and submit. He was beautiful.

"There are no bad dogs, only bad owners."

Alexander Davies, of Southport, said: "These dogs should be banned because a child could be killed. Yobowners should face a very high penalty. They are using these dogs as weapons, not pets."

Dee Kirkham, of West Derby, said: "I support the ban on dangerous dogs because they have become the yobs' status symbol. You never see a dangerous dog with amuzzle, even though it is a legal requirement."

Brian Davis, of Liverpool city centre, said: "I fully agree with this campaign. I think dogs should all be microchipped."
