We'll back crackdown on danger dog owners

Jul 17 2006

Cllr Warren Bradley

CITY officials today threw their weight behind the ECHO's Biteback campaign after senior councillors said they have witnessed fatal dog attacks first hand.

Council leader Warren Bradley is to speak to Merseyside's chief constable Bernard Hogan-Howe about how the town hall can help the ongoing crackdown against thugs with dangerous dogs.

The ECHO launched a fight-back against the growing problem after a string of vicious attacks by out-of-control animals on people and helpless pets.

Councillors have now demanded action in two city parks where they say there are particular problems.

Cllr Marilyn Fielding, executive member for housing, named Stanley park and Walton Hall park, both in north Liverpool, as areas where dog walkers nowfear to go.

She said: "There are animals being killed in this city every day by dangerous dogs.

"A fortnight ago, I walked around Walton Hall park with my German Shepherd - I would not take a smaller dog because I knowwhat would happen.

"A responsible dog owner was there with two dogs on leads, and another dog savaged one of them.

"Something needs to be done, because once these dogs start, they do not know when to stop, and a small child is going to be attacked. "Parks are for the law-abiding people, not thugs with dogs.

"I would like to know how proactive our parks staffare at dealing with this issue."
