'Magnificent' response

MORE than 450 boxes of supplies for tsunami survivors in Sri Lanka have been donated by the people of Merseyside.

Medical equipment, warm clothes, blankets and powdered milk were collected by the Sri Lankan Association of Merseyside after an appeal in the ECHO.

The supplies were loaded into a cargo container and are now on their way to the disaster zone.

Dr Genabala Welhengam, secretary of the group, says they were " overwhelmed" by the acts of kindness.

He said: "The public's response to our request has been magnificent.

"In two weeks we have been able to collect more than 450 boxes of clothes, medicines and foods.

"There are so many people we would like to thank."

The organisation was supported by students from Hope university and many volunteers from local churches.

The society now plans to sponsor an orphanage or a school in Sri Lanka and a special fund has been set up.

Anybody who wishes to make a donation to the appeal can do so at any branch of Barclays bank by using the account number 20278688 and sort code 205101.

Meetings will take place next week between the Sri Lankan Society, Hope university and the city council on how to develop the plans.
