Even apes on the danger list back England

Jun 30 2006

Daily Post, Liverpool Echo

A GROUP of endangered apes showed their support for England's World Cup squad by draping themselves in St George's Cross flags.

The Sumatran orang-utans at Chester Zoo backed the team ahead of their quarter-final clash with Portugal on Saturday.

Visitors to the zoo can watch the big match live on a giant screen.

Chester Zoo is building a £3m enclosure for the orangutans, whose numbers in the wild have fallen dramatically.

Mike Jordan, Chester Zoo's Curator of Birds and Mammals, said: "At the current rate of decline, wild orang-utans will be extinct in 10 to 20 years' time.. That is a frightening fact and it is vital we do all we can to ensure their survival.
