* REGARDING the demonstration by the Countryside Alliance: I have been on a number of demonstrations with building workers, shop repair workers over issue of employment, anti-trade union laws and opposition to the Vietnam war. The participants had deep feelings and conviction.

But I have never witnessed the savagery and hatred displayed by the pro-hunt mob outside the House of Commons.

Frank Foley,
Garston, Liverpool 19.

* SADLY, I. Swan (ECHO, letters September 16) thinks millions of people are killed by religion. Against that, many more millions have proved for themselves the saving grace of God.

All moral ethics come from religion and for 2,000 years, Christianity has proved itself. Not indoctrination, but living testimony.

I suggest I. Swan reads for himself the 14th chapter of St John over and over and see if it helps.

Mrs E. Pursglove,
Netherton

* DON'T you dread to think what November 5 will bring this year after the firework attacks we have already had? It is so bad we have had to set up a team of special police officers to deal with it.

We should back Norman Bettison's call for a national ban. With a lot of public backing, it could be done and it would make for a lot of relieved people and animals.

M. Dunford,
Old Swan

* IS anyone else having a problem with their post in Knowsley? Our postman has not been seen for quite a number of weeks and he's done a great job. You were guaranteed to see him around 8-8.30 every morning regardless of the weather, but recently we have had nothing short of a shoddy service from Royal Mail.

We either get nothing for days or receive our post late in the afternoon. Today's post arrived at 2.45pm. The men delivering have no uniform, just the postbag to indicate who they are. So come on Royal Mail, give us back the service we could once rely on.

K. Birch,
Knowsley

* WHAT is wrong with Liverpool city council? We have been waiting for an Olympic-sized swimming pool for years and then when it finally looks likely to happen, the decision was postponed because an official was on holiday.

Surely Liverpool's swimmers deserve better than this.

Billy Davies,
Everton

* I LOST an unusual rare gold holy medal of Our Lady, of considerable sentimental value, in Marks and Spencer's Gemini store in Warrington on Thursday, September 16. Could anyone with any information please call 0151-526 8432?
