Cruel bird imports

TWO things have prompted me to write this letter - Susan Lee saying that bird flu was unavoidable (ECHO, Oct 21), and a report I read about bird markets in Britain.

Two things are mainly responsible for the current crisis:

Firstly, the way billions of birds are intensively farmed - obviously disease can spread like lightning in such cramped conditions, and immunity breaks down due to overuse of antibiotics, which they are pumped full of.

Secondly, the appalling practice of importing exotic birds, both legally and illegally. It is incredibly cruel, and the markets where they are sold are obvious sources of infection.

Ah well, we reap what we sow.

Punishment battle

AT last the government is attempting to rectify one of the worst ever social errors... the "my rights" children..

Do wrong and face the consequences is one of life's first lessons, but society has taught youngsters to ignore responsibilities and enjoy power over teaching staff.

Would we give a child a loaded machine gun? Children should have only one right - to be protected from all harm. The abolition of corporal punishment was a gross over-reaction to child abuse.

A Christian school here in Liverpool is in a legal battle to administer CP and I pray for their victory.

Let's follow the manufacturer's instructions and do things God's way.

Peter Bell,
L11
