MPs running scared

WHAT'S going on in this country of ours? Law and order is breaking down, there is no justice for victims of crime, everything seems to be on the side of the criminals.

Mothers who abandon their little children and go on holiday, get a slap on the wrist and their children returned to them, to further abuse.

Even when the government tries to get tough on suspected terrorists and criminals the opposition and government rebels combine to try and defeat them, and nearly did.

What the hell are they in office for, to support crime and criminals or to go with the whim of their leaders and defeat the government of the day, even when their conscience tells them the way to vote?

It seems to me that MPs would rather go easy on the criminals in case they upset them and give them a pat on the head, a gentle one at that, instead of giving them something to remember.

It's about time MPs stood up and were counted. They should go with their consciences and not follow their leaders on their every whim just to defeat a government whoever is in power.

Bill Locke,
Speke.

Just tidy up

VISITING the city recently I was very interested in seeing things first hand. It was good to see all the building going on in the city centre, but the general dirty, untidy, littered look about the place was disappointing.

There appeared to be little difference from my last visit three years ago! Some parts of the city, such as the Albert Dock, are quite tidy. However I walked through the Ropewalks area and although there have been some warehouses converted to apartments and others newly built, I found it strewn with garbage and builders' refuse.

The same can be said along the route I took through Everton to see a football game.

From what I saw things really need to greatly improve before 2008.

I don't dig it!

I WORK in the city centre and live in Walton on the 19 bus route.

The situation regarding the amount of time it takes to get into work because of the roadworks is now intolerable. I've tried to be patient and understand that it is for the long-term improvement of our roads.

However, I left home at 8am and got into work at 9.55am. As well as the usual gridlock, my bus was stuck on Everton Road for almost an hour as that is now down to one lane of traffic. I am furious that I have been put in the position of being late for work and potentially losing my job as a result.

What makes the situation worse is that I frequently pass roadworks which have no workmen working on them!

Is there a centralised planning team working on the Big Dig? I cannot believe that such chaos has any effective organisation behind it or that those in charge care about the disruption and stress it is causing.

This Big Dig nightmare is bad for businesses, bad for individuals making their way to work by bus or car and is a real deterrent to people who wish to do their shopping in the city centre.

J. Boyne,
Walton
