THE chap from Portugal (ECHO Letters, Nov 25) needs to go a bit further back when reminiscing about England and Liverpool in particular.
The country was suffering from runaway inflation under Harold Wilson/Jim Callaghan. The Chancellor (Denis Healy) had to plead, cap in hand, with the IMF for huge loans.
There were strikes every other week - the buses seemed to be on permanent strike. Rubbish piled up in the streets, bodies piled up in the mortuaries (the grave-diggers were on strike). The country was in permanent crisis.
Margaret Thatcher dragged us back into the real world.
SIR Paul McCartney last week highlighted the terrible cruelty of the fur trade in China, which uses the coats of both domestic cats and dogs.
To my horror I have noticed that the use of animal fur to trim clothing is on the increase and that a number of shops and market stalls in Liverpool are selling scarves, boots and even coats that are finished with animal fur.
I hope that people consider where this product has come from and what terrible suffering has taken place and not to buy such items.

Hooray for Santa
I WAS in the city centre yesterday and it was a great sight to see the streets awash with red and white as thousands of Santas took part in a charity race. Well done to all those who ran for the Marina Dalglish Appeal.
