Profitable bus lane

I AM writing to express my utter contempt regarding being issued with a fixed penalty on Lime Street on Monday afternoon. I came down from Mount Pleasant following a bus, turned on to Lime Street and carried straight on like I have done several times in the past.

I was then signalled to pull outside the Holiday Inn by a police officer, whose exact words were: "You have not got a clue why we have pulled you over."

Then I was told that the day before it had become a dedicated bus lane.

There were no police officers at the start of the bus lane advising motorists of the changes; they were at the end dishing out tickets at £30 a time.

What also concerns me is the use of beat bobbies to dish out tickets. I am sure that Merseyside police has not got spare resources or is so free of crime it can afford the use of police time on such a minor infringement.

Later on, I was travelling in the opposite direction and found the whole bus lane jammed with cars which had also fallen foul of the changes.

I presume crime figures will not have gone down that day, but at least it was very profitable.

S Slann,

Inappropriately naked

WELL said, Jane Freeman from Allerton (ECHO Letters, July 3), regarding men who strip off their shirts the minute hot weather is here.

I am sick of seeing men who think it is acceptable to strip half naked, regardless of whether they be fit or fat!

It is often in inappropriate places, like last week a man with his wife and child shopping in Asda and today another young man in Iceland.

What about health and hygiene? Do you see women topless? No! In skimpy tops maybe, but never topless.

The infuriating thing is many men have more up top than the women. It's just not nice and should be outlawed!

In places where food is concerned, the stores should stop men from walking in unless covered up. It would be interesting to see what the public think - an ECHO poll, perhaps?

S.H,

Males more tolerant

JANE Freeman (ECHO Letters, July 3) has a problem with men removing their shirts in the supermarket in this hot weather.

We males are more tolerant: ladies strip off whenever they like!

G A E Williams,
Penketh
