Now Liverpool councillor Joe Anderson, leader of the campaign to free Michael, has offered to pay for Sankey to fly to Bulgaria and be interviewed.

Cllr Anderson said: "Any honourable person accused of something they claimed they did not do would want to clear their name."

"I have spoken to Mr Shields, I have seen all of the evidence and the way this case has been handled and Michael Shields is completely innocent.

"As a result of Mr Sankey not making himself available for questioning, an innocent man remains in prison."

Wavertree student Michael Shields, 19, was jailed after being convicted of attempted murder.

He has always denied smashing a paving slab on father-of-two Mr Georgiev's head and faces a final appeal on March 21.
