MICHAEL Shields was today starting his new life as a free man back in his Liverpool home.
The 22-year-old Liverpool fan was trying to re-adjust to normality after a whirlwind 24 hours which saw him finally granted a royal pardon by justice secretary Jack Straw.
He emerged smiling from prison in Warrington yesterday morning and was driven to face the world’s media at a press conference in the ECHO’s city centre offices.
He thanked his tireless supporters and declared: "Today is the first day of the rest of my life."
