"We believe strongly that there is no foundation whatsoever for this action and would call upon the police to reconsider their position.
"There are serious discrepancies between the evidence in the Bulgarian court in the Michael Shields case and the statement made by my client on July 28 last year.
"It is our belief that we may be talking about two entirely separate incidents."
He added: "There has been no contact from the Bulgarian authorities with my client."
Wavertree student Michael Shields, 19, was jailed after being convicted of attempted murder by a Bulgarian court last summer. He has always denied smashing a paving slab on waiter Martin Georgiev's head.
