Pay for the crime you committed

Michael Shields in his prison cell in Varna

JAILED teenager Michael Shields today begged Graham Sankey to go to Bulgaria and face justice for the brutal attack he has admitted carrying out.

Speaking exclusively from Varna prison Michael, 18, said: "If I could speak to him I'd ask him to get on the first plane over here and pay for the crime he committed."

Wavertree student Michael is currently waiting for an appeal against the 15-year sentence he was given despite Sankey's confession.

Michael was convicted after a Bulgarian court refused to accept Sankey's testimony that he was responsible for the paving-slab attack which left a father-of-two with brain damage in Bulgaria's Golden Sands resort on May 30.

The ECHO has campaigned for justice on Michael's behalf after uncovering a string of inconsistencies in the evidence against him.

Campaigners this week hung a 25ft Free Michael Shields banner over the white cliffs of Dover.

Last month we revealed how the Bulgarian court which convicted Shields did try to call Sankey but the home office rejected the bid to subpoena him due to lack of notice.
