Shields family to meet Jack Straw

Sep 8 2005

Liverpool Echo

THE SHIELDS family is to have talks with Jack Straw in London.

Campaigners descended on the foreign secretary's Blackburn constituency today to put pressure on the foreign minister.

Riverside MP Louise Ellman, who has backed the bid to free Michael Shields from jail in Bulgaria, said a meeting had been arranged for next Tuesday.

Michael is serving a 15-year sentence for an attack on a Bulgarian barman, despite Anfield electrician Graham Sankey confessing to the crime.

Ms Ellman promised to put pressure on Mr Straw to ensure Bulgarian authorities investigated new evidence.

She said she hoped Mr Straw would exert influence over Merseyside police to explore all options to investigate Mr Sankey.

"I've been in almost constant contact with Jack Straw's office to engineer a meeting."
