A CALL is to be made for Graham Sankey, the man who has confessed to the assault in Bulgaria that has seen Michael Shields imprisoned, to surrender to police.
Liverpool City Council's chief executive, Sir David Henshaw, has been asked to write to Mr Sankey asking him to present himself as soon as possible to the Bulgarian police for questioning about the attack on Martin Georgiev.
The city council last night pledged to do all it could to assist in bringing justice for Michael Shields.
Labour leader Cllr Joe Anderson said Sir David's letter to Mr Sankey should point out that the council and citizens of Liverpool expect him to "do the right and honourable thing".
Sir David will also be writing to two witnesses, Bradley Thompson and Anthony Wilson, both friends of Mr Sankey, who gave evidence that they had seen someone else committing the crime for which Mr Shields was convicted and imprisoned for 15 years.
Cllr Anderson told the council: "This council expresses no views on the guilt or innocence or behaviour of any of the people named, but we wish to see all the evidence presented to the courts in Bulgaria so Michael Shields can receive a fair trial.
"This council wants justice for Martin Georgiev and for Michael Shields."
Mr Shields is awaiting a full appeal hearing in the hope of overturning his conviction.
Mr Sankey has signed a confession that he threw a brick. He said he did not know Mr Georgiev had been hit by the brick.
