Never have I been so proud to be a Scouser

MICHAEL Shields has written an emotional letter to the people of Liverpool from his Bulgarian prison cell. The teenager speaks of his pride in being a Scouser and thanks the thousands of people who have offered their support. But he also condemned the man who has admitted carrying out the brutal attack for not being prepared to take the punishment. In his letter, sent to the ECHO, the 19-year-old says: "I have never been so proud than I am now to say and shout the name of my city. Only the people of Liverpool could have shown such support which is what is keeping me going. Story continues ADVERTISEMENT "I am ashamed to say that the people who committed this attack are from Liverpool and call themselves Scousers. "These people bring a bad name to our city. Like cowards they have taken a step back and denied that they were part of this crime. "They have let this happen and kept quiet to save their own skin. "Graham Sankey has said he will take the blame, but he is scared of the punishment." Michael's parents, Michael and Maria, are in Bulgaria visiting their son. His aunt, Jeannette Shields, said: "Michael wrote the letter last week. "He has been feeling very down, particularly as Christmas is approaching, and I think he wanted to get these things off his chest. "His mum and dad are over there and they have taken some gloves with them because it's getting very cold. "All we can really do is wait for the appeal."
