THE family of jailed teenager Michael Shields have spoke of their hope after his final make-or-break appeal was brought forward.

Bulgarian officials have decided to move the crucial hearing from May to March 21 after the country's prime minister promised a fair hearing.

The Wavertree student was jailed last May for an attack on a barman which another Liverpool man, electrician Graham Sankey, has confessed to.

Today, Michael Snr, 46, said: "We've had so many ups and downs recently that we don't want to get our hopes up.

"But it shows the Bulgarian courts have recognised what their prime minister has come out and said. He has said we can expect fairness and I'm delighted with that.

"Anything which means we don't have to be stuck in limbo a day longer is a good thing."

Now his legal team, including a new top international barrister, must battle against time to be ready for the appeal in the Bulgarian capital Sofia next month.

Politicians who have campaigned for Michael also welcomed the news.
