GRAHAM Sankey today sensationally claimed he was NOT behind the attack for which Michael Shields is serving 15 years in a Bulgarian jail.
On the steps of Liverpool magistrates court, just minutes after contesting a police bid for a football banning order, Sankey's solicitor read a statement in which the burly Anfield electrician retracted his confession.
As Sankey lurked inside the court, his legal team insisted that after careful examination they were confident the attack he admitted to was different to the one in the Shields case.
Reading the statement, solicitor David Kirwan said: "The Sankey family and myself are at a loss to understand why Merseyside Police have chosen to bring these proceedings against my client.
"Graham Sankey has never been involved in a football related incident in this country and the police application concerns an incident on foreign soil for which he has never been tried, let alone convicted.
