24-hour wait on appeal bid

Apr 19 2006

Michael Shields in court for his appeal

MICHAEL Shields is facing a nervous 24-hour wait to learn whether his final appeal against his conviction for attempted murder has succeeded.

Tomorrow is the final day of the 30 days Supreme Court judges were given to reach a decision.

Today his family in Wavertree vowed never to give up on justice as they waited to hear if the teenager will get a re-trial.

They spoke after an ITV documentary again appeared to show that the case against Michael was "unbelievably flawed" and "a mockery of justice".

Liverpool fan Michael is serving 15 years in a Bulgarian prison for the attempted murder of a Bulgarian barman in May 2004.

He claims that he was in bed in his hotel when the attack on barman Martin Georgiev took place at the resort of Golden Sands.

Electrician Graham Sankey, from Anfield, has "confessed" to the attack but subsequently retracted it.
