MICHAEL Shields's father collapsed with heart problems after the Bulgarian government increased his son's £70,000 fine by nearly £10,000.
Michael snr was rushed to hospital after learning the family now owed nearly £80,000, which must be paid before the 19-year-old can be transferred from Bulgaria to a British jail.
The longer the fine remains un-paid, the more interest it gathers.
The 46-year-old has already had to quit full-time work as a window cleaner to support his son in Bulgaria, and his wife Marie lost her cleaning job with Liverpool council after Christmas when she used all her allocated sick leave.
Mr Shields went to his doctor complaining of chest pains and was taken to the Royal Liverpool hospital by paramedics last Thursday.
He was kept in while heart specialists ran a series of tests before he was allowed home.
Michael Shields is in a Bulgarian prison after being convicted of attempted murder last summer as he stayed in the Golden Sands resort after watching Liverpool FC become European Champions.
Earlier this year his sentence was cut from 15 years to 10, but his fines and costs rose to £70,000.
