Should city welcome Condoleezza Rice?

It sends the wrong signal to peace-loving people
NO SAYS Alec McFadden, President Merseyside TUC

Alec McFadden, president of the Merseyside TUC

THE woman who I regard as the most dangerous in the world has NOT been invited by the people of Merseyside.

Condoleezza Rice, USA Secretary of State has, and still is, in the business of organising the bombing and killing of innocent people at the request of the Bush family and the USA Government (Afghanistan and Iraq twice).

The invitation, from Jack Straw, UK Foreign Secretary, and also an architect of the illegal invasion of Iraq and Liverpool City Council, sends the wrong signal to the peace-loving people of the world, and most importantly the young people of Merseyside.

Only two weeks ago the Liverpool Echo, Merseyside Police, politicians and the community launched a campaign against gun crime in our city. How can anyone take that campaign seriously if we allow Ms Rice, an architect of war, bombing, automatic weapons and guns on the civilian population of Iraq and Afghanistan (maybe Iran next) to come to our city?

The Merseyside TUC and Education Authorities linked up with the Liverpool Echo to create the Merseyside Anti School

Bullying campaign "Bullybusters" so that our young people/school students can get the most out of their time and education free from bullying in our schools. Ms Rice and the USA war machine are the world's biggest state bullies, for oil, land and business.

The people of Merseyside, who are opposed to the war in Iraq, gun crime and bullying in our schools and workplaces need to raise their concerns and voices now. No invite, no welcome, no visit to our city for war criminals, killers and bullies of innocent women, children and men.

Ms Rice, as Secretary of State, is also directly responsible for the hundreds of civilians held in Guantanamo Bay, held without any charges or trial. The United Nations and even the Blair Government has demanded their freedom, or trial. Three years later, they are still imprisoned.

Merseyside has suffered over the past 30 years with high unemployment, poor housing, leading to poverty, poor health and social problems. The people of Merseyside are all proud and determined to change for the better, our communities. If we sit back and allow the UK Foreign Secretary and warmonger, Jack Straw, to bring a USA war criminal to our city to receive civic hospitality and be entertained by the pride of Merseyside culture, Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, then what kind of example would we be setting?

In life, we are judged by what we do and the people we befriend. The people of Merseyside and our European City of Culture don't wish to be associated with bullies, warmongers and killers, so Ms Rice is not welcome here. Maybe Jack Straw would be better spending more time and energy in his own patch, trying to regenerate and repairing some of the 4,000 holes in Blackburn Lancashire.
