MERSEYSIDE is set to become the first force in the country to try to use private sector money to pay for new police officers.

Chief Constable Bernard Hogan-Howe is trying to secure funding to help recruit an extra 200 officers in time for Liverpool’s Capital of Culture celebrations.

Last week it emerged the Government is unlikely to hand over the rest of the £9m Mr Hogan-Howe needs to fulfil his pledge to put an officer on every street corner during 2008.

The city council and police authority believe Liverpool should be treated the same way as Manchester when it was given extra money for the Commonwealth Games.

But the Home Office has so far refused to foot the bill because Capital of Culture is not an “unexpected or enforced” event.

Mr Hogan-Howe is now looking at alternative options to secure the vital cash to pay for extra security during Liverpool’s spotlight year.

He hopes to persuade the public sector to contribute, but is also considering the radical option of asking the private sector to contribute.

Today the Daily Post asks: Should the city’s businesses be asked to help pay for the city’s policing costs?
