Mark Gonzalez

NEWLY-APPOINTED Real Betis coach Hector Cuper has approved the Spanish club’s move for Liverpool winger Mark Gonzalez.

Betis narrowly avoided relegation from the Primera Liga last season after finishing in 16th and are busy rebuilding their squad.

Gonzalez, who previously spent a year on loan with Real Sociedad, is thought to be close to finalising his transfer, along with Portuguese goalkeeper Ricardo and Argentina striker Mariano Pavone, after failing to establish himself at Anfield.

“We will do everything possible to create a team that is strong but that also has a winning mentality,” said Cuper, who was signed a one-year contract. “The important thing is that this team has a strong personality.”

Gonzalez could be presented alongside the other transfer targets later today.

Meanwhile Javier Mascherano will be given extra time off after playing in the Copa America.

Mascherano – who saw his Argentina side lose out 3-0 to Brazil in Sunday's final – will miss Liverpool’s trip to Hong Kong next week.

“Mascherano will have ten days off, but when he returns he will stay at Melwood with the reserves,” said Benitez. “There would be too much travelling for him to come with us to Hong Kong. We don't want to kill the player before the start of the season.”

Benitez tinkers with training

LESS is more for Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez.

The Spaniard has revealed how he has adapted pre-season training so his players don’t make the kind of sluggish start which has undermined their title hopes in recent seasons.

"We have been making a number of small changes to the training this summer," he explained. "Our idea is to train a bit less, but when we do train it will be with more intensity."
