Voronin eager to impress

NEW Liverpool signing Andriy Voronin is determined to make his mark at Anfield.

The Ukrainian striker is relishing the chance to prove himself in the Premiership after being snapped up on a free transfer from Bayer Leverkusen.

And the 27-year-old, who scored 10 goals in 37 games last season, has his sights firmly set on a starting place next season.

“I haven't made this decision to just sit on the bench,” he insisted.

“I will be coming to get into the team and form a partnership with someone.”

Voronin, who has 44 caps for Ukraine, signed a four-year deal with the Reds back in February.

He will face tough competition for places next season with boss Rafa Benitez currently battling to add to his striking options.

One of his targets, Argentina forward Diego Milito, did his chances of securing a move to Anfield no harm with two goals in Real Zaragoza’s 2-2 draw against Real Madrid on Saturday.

Another possible summer recruit, Diego Forlan, also scored twice as Villarreal beat Athletic Bilbao 3-1 in La Liga.

The Uruguayan, who has three years to run on his contract, is believed to be keen on a move back to England.

Forlan’s agent Daniel Bolotnicoff said: “There has not been any offer from Liverpool and it’s very difficult to talk about what might happen when there isn’t an offer there, but things can change every day.

“If he received a very good offer then he will think about it, but it will also depend on whether Villarreal are happy.”

Both Milito and Forlan would cost in the region of £16m to £18m.

Meanwhile, Reds skipper Steven Gerrard admits he has been left exhausted by the demands of a gruelling campaign.

Gerrard started 58 games for club and country last season but now has a month off to recharge his batteries.

“I desperately need a rest, it’s as simple as that. I’m worn out,” he explained.

“Two and a half weeks off after the World Cup wasn’t enough to prepare for a hectic season which included going all the way in the Champions League final and playing for England.

“It’s been a difficult season for me, but I’m getting married next week and I’ve got four weeks to put my feet up.

“The international players get an extra week and I’ve got to make the most of it.

“Demands on players at the highest level can be excessive. It’s a no-win situation because the more success you have the more games you have to play. But it’s going to be a big season next year for club and country.

"Domestically Liverpool has to improve and for England we have to build on recent performances and make sure we qualify for Euro 2008.”

Meanwhile, the Reds are expected to hold more talks with Marseille this week regarding the future of Djibril Cisse.

The French club are understood to want to extend the striker’s loan for another season, but Liverpool are holding out for a sale.
