What did you move to Liverpool for, Jan?

JAN KROMKAMP has been criticised by Holland coach Marco van Basten for moving to European Cup holders Liverpool.

The Dutch legend accused the right-sided player of making "wrong choices" for his career as he explained the decision to leave him out of Holland's squad to play Ecuador on Wednesday.

Kromkamp moved to Anfield from Villarreal in January in a swap deal that saw Josemi return to Spain, after enduring a difficult time during his short spell in La Liga following a summer move from AZ Alkmaar.

The 25-year-old, who has eight caps, played on the right side of midfield for Liverpool in Sunday's win over Manchester City but has made only one other start since switching to the European Champions.

And van Basten has admitted to being disappointed that Kromkamp chose not to move to a club where he was guaranteed more regular first-team football.

"It is annoying that Kromkamp, who is a good player, made the wrong choices for his career," said van Basten.

"It is sad when someone throws away his own chances and also doesn't help us.

"It seems to us that Jan is more busy with peripheral events.

"Jan has to make choices. I have no influence on that but, if he wanted my advice, that was possible."

Van Basten is believed to have been upset with Kromkamp's decision to leave Alkmaar at the end of last season, and the player's omission from the Holland's latest squad casts serious doubt over his chances of appearing in this summer's World Cup.

Kromkamp is the latest Liverpool player facing potential World Cup misery.

Djibril Cisse was left out of France's squad this week, while Kromkamp's Dutch team-mate Boudewijn Zenden is almost certainly out of the tournament after suffering cruciate knee ligament damage in December.
