Baker discovers a winning recipe in the Steel City

Oct 20 2009

Houlihans Birkenhead League

by Graeme Kearney, Liverpool Daily Post

QUEENS PARK made the return journey to Sheffield a lot easier to bear as Andy Bolton, James Atherton and Dennis Baker fired them to an impressive 3-1 win at Towngate in the FA Sunday Cup first round.

Brow FC also had a great victory with Dave Booles and Daniel Grannon on target. But Thornhill Lees showed no surrender and fired home twice before Jamie Campbell and Phil Owen made sure of the Brows’ passage into round two.

Towers FC didn’t have the best of days in their tie with Salisbury Athletic as they fell dramatically, losing 6-0.

Lee Yarlett fired a superb brace for New Ferry Hotel in the Presidents Cup first round against Argyll.

Lloyd Ithel hammered home a penalty and a neat second before Wayne Hulse made sure of an Argyll win.

Neil Callister continued his own fine run of form as he guided his pride of Lions to an impressive 4-0 win over Oak Tree.

Captain Craig Parry also netted a double.

John Owens, Will Kandot and a gem from Derek Byrne helped Wavertree Wanderers defeat Houlihans 3-2 in the Tony Smith League Cup first round.
