WEEKEND action was dominated by the Liverpool County FA Challenge Cup Round two ties, which produced some minor shocks along the way. Holders Aigburth PH easily strolled past Kingsley United (3-0) even with the luxury of a missed penalty by Mick Hannway who made up for the miss by scoring. Reggie Standish and Tom McDonough hit the other goals for APH. South Sefton made hard work of Angus Village before dispatching them 2-1, John Maguire and Roy Harrison with the goals for Sefton. Birchfield are on a mini roll after they beat Copperas Hill 4-2 after extra time. Jamie Gardner hit a brace for Birchfield whilst Steve Murphy also nabbed two for Copperas Hill. St Aloysius won the all-Premier tie 3-2 against Cheshire Lines, Jamie Henders adding another to his total to go to 11 goals, whilst centre-half Steve McLinden scored a rare goal for Cheshire Lines. Collegiate were well-beaten 3-0 by Crosfields/Rylands of the Cheshire League. Page Celtic went one further than Old Xaverians to beat Greenalls Padgate 3-2 after extra time, in a game remarkable for the winner scored by Mick James from 40 yards. Halewood Town also needed extra time and also the dreaded penalties after they drew 1-1 with Maghull Reserves, who won 4-3 on penalties. Andrew Ming scored for Halewood. Halebank were beaten 1-0 by Marine Reserves. Leyfield went to West Cheshire side Mossley Hill Athletic and won 3-1, Dave Pugh with a brace and Dave Cringle with the goals for Leyfield. REMYCA saw off AFC Liverpool Reserves 1-0 with Paul Smith grabbing the all-important winner. One of the shocks came when Sacre Coeur FP were eaten by Eagle Sports, also from the Cheshire League. Duncan Atkinson scored the Coeur goal. Another shock was Premier League side South Liverpool losing to First Division side Stoneycroft 2-1, with Paul Finnegan scoring a superb winner. Essemmay OB are also through after a good scrap with Warrington Town Reserves, winning 2-1. Waterloo Dock hammered Roma 8-0, Tony Denson with a hat-trick and Leighton McGivern with a brace on his return. In league matters, the Premier Division had just one game and Lucas Sports took advantage to beat Albany 4-3 in a thriller, Paul Wainwright with a double for Lucas replied to by a double for Richie Lamb for Albany, but it’s Lucas who move to 12th place on the strength of the win In Division One there were just two games and East Villa Reserves are still rock bottom after NELTC beat them 2-1 and helped them go ninth. Lee Tracy hit the Villa goal but James King and Mark Tyrer ensured all points went to NELTC. Mackets go clear third after a 3-2 home win over Edge Hill BCOB, Ryan Morgan and Andy Ronan amongst the scorers for Mackets, with Scott McVie scoring for Edge Hill. There were plenty of shocks in the John Gregson Memorial Cup. In Group B, NELTC Res held on to win 4-3 against Alder to record their first Cup win of the season. Leading at one time 3-0, NELTC let Alder come back to 3-3 only for a second half penalty scored by Joe Burns to seal the win for NELTC. St Helens Town Reserves beat Unity 2-0 to be on level points for the group. |
