Summit meeting ends in stalemate at The Pavilions

Oct 20 2009

Carlsberg West Cheshire League

by Allen Price, Liverpool Daily Post

ALL eyes were focused firmly on The Pavilions Sports Complex in Runcorn.

Second-placed Runcorn Town have made no secret of their intention to take the next step up the non-league pyramid. So what better test of their credentials for promotion could there be than the visit of table toppers, Cammell Laird?

In a closely fought encounter the teams cancelled each other out 0-0.

Current champions West Kirby take advantage of the stalemate at Willaston, although they were made to work all the way to the final whistle, edging the game by the odd goal in five. Kevin Bimpson, Mike Burke and Terry Cotgrave found the net for the Mariners. Willaston’s Karl Dunbar grabbed a brace in reply. West Kirby are slowly but very surely getting closer to top spot, now only two points behind Lairds.

Heswall made their case for the title with an emphatic 4-1 drubbing of Blacon at Gayton Park. Iain Colligan, Ben King, Matty Houghton and Danny Menhard confirmed Heswall’s fourth place in the league. Blacon’s James Antrobus scored the Chester-based side’s consolation.

Castrol Social were looking for a result to lift them away from the drop zone as they visited next door neighbours, Ellesmere Port. Whilst a Rob Jones goal ensured a share of the points, they are still perilously close to the trap door. Mark Jones was Port’s scorer.

Christleton continue to confound the West Cheshire pundits with an excellent 4-3 win at Newton that firmly places them in mid-table. Two goals from Dan Davies and a goal apiece from Paul Sweeney and Paul Hollifield made sure of the three points.

In the Youth Division the question is, who can stop San Sebastian’s?

Their 5-0 away rout of Mount Athletic gave the Litherland-based side a seven game 100% record. Certainly the much fancied South Liverpool side, 4-1 winners at Sao Paulo, have a real challenger to their claims for the title.
