‘Stupid’ Whitehaven will pay says John Duffy

Aug 21 2009

By John Lawless, Liverpool Echo

WIDNES utility man John Duffy aims to show his former club what they’ve been missing when his side take on Whitehaven at Stobart Stadium Halton tomorrow (kick-off 6pm).

Duffy joined the Vikings from the Cumbrian side midway through the 2008 season and doesn’t hesitate when asked if playing against his old mates gives the game an extra edge.

“I believe it does,” he insisted.

“I don’t want to miss this week against a former team of mine.

“I want to prove to them they were stupid to let me go and that’s what I’ll be thinking when I get out there.”

Apart from his own personal motivation, Duffy knows Saturday could be crucial in determining Widnes’s final league position in the Co-Operative Championship.

Paul Cullen’s men lay fifth going into this weekend’s matches and even though this will be their last game of the regular season, there is still a possibility they could finish higher up the ladder.

It will mean some results going their way in matches between teams who still have a couple of fixtures to play, but it’s an opportunity they need to grasp.

He added: “We need a big win this week.

“All the lads are going to have to be fired up because Whitehaven have hit a bit of form.

“We’ll train hard this week and put it on for the fans in the last home game.

“It’s close all the way down the table if you look at it.

“So a good win could take us back up without a shadow of a doubt.

“The other results can go any way on the day, so we just have to focus on our own game.”

Duffy is expecting to return after missing last Thursday’s 38-16 defeat at Barrow through injury.

And if they can get some more of their experienced players fit for the play-offs, he believes anything is possible.

He added: “If you look at it, when we’ve lost we’ve been missing some key players.

“But when we’ve had those key men playing, we’ve won convincingly.

“So to me, keeping the key players fit will benefit us because we can beat any team in the league.”

By a quirk of the fixture list, the Vikings face a three-week lay-off after Saturday before the Championship play-offs begin.
