Gareth Ellis has that strength in depth knowledge

Oct 28 2009

By Ian Laybourn, Liverpool Echo

ENGLAND’S Sydney-based forward Gareth Ellis reckons Australia could field “two or three” teams that would all be competitive in the Four Nations.

The former Leeds Rhinos second rower, fresh from his first season with Wests Tigers, has been impressed with the Kangaroos’ strength in depth but believes England can topple them in a one-off match and hopes that will be the case at Wigan on Saturday.

Ellis, 28, knows the Australians having played against them for the Tigers this year, and he believes coach Tim Sheens, his club boss in Sydney, has assembled the best of the best.

“It’s a worthy Australian team,” he said. “The thing with their game is there are that many players to pick from and there is always going to be a difference of opinion.

“You find there’s some players who play State of Origin who don’t play for Australia and the other way around because the selectors are slightly different.

“They could probably field two or three teams. What I’ve found is that every club has superstars and then there’s those just underneath who are really good players as well.”
