Cunningham performance earns praise from Potter

By Ian Laybourn, Liverpool Daily Post

MICK POTTER paid a glowing tribute to Keiron Cunningham after the hooker guided St Helens to a comfortable away win at Harlequins on Saturday.

Cunningham provided the impetus as the Saints ran in eight tries to down Quins in the capital – a result which eased the visitors two points clear of Leeds Rhinos at the engage Super League summit.

And Potter hailed his hooker, who had faced a possible suspension after tangling with Wakefield’s James Stosic last week.

Potter said: “I thought Keiron turned in another really good display today.

“But then again I cannot remember a time since I came here that he has produced anything other than a quality performance.

“It never entered my head that he would be suspended and miss the game today.

“Other people kept suggesting it to me but I just thought it was a lot of hype to be honest. It was a nothing incident and we have moved on.”

Cunningham had a hand in everything good from the visitors, who ran in six first-half tries to all but end the game as a contest.

Tom Armstrong was the first to cross in the corner, and Tony Puletua helped himself to a brace.

Further tries before the interval came from James Graham, Kyle Eastmond and Leon Pryce as the visitors cut the home defence to ribbons, seemingly at will.

Saints took their foot off the gas after the break and Harlequins deserve some credit for running in four scores of their own – Gareth Haggerty, Chad Robinson, Danny Ward and Matt Gafa getting their names on the scoresheet.

Despite seeing his side slump to their sixth successive defeat, Quins coach Brian McDermott refused to be downcast.

He said: “I am still 100% confident that we will make the play-offs.

“The players are a very strong group and there is no problem with the attitude.

“There are plenty of things that we are not doing right but everyone is working hard.

“But we will be getting players like Chad Randall and David Howell back next week so there is no need to panic.”
