THE Luke Robinson fan club missed one of their hero’s proudest moments on Sunday but will be out in force to see him at Wembley in three weeks’ time.
Huddersfield scrum-half Robinson has been followed around Super League this season by a group of brightly-clad women including his fiancee Laura. Wearing yellow T-shirts and making plenty of noise, the girls attracted many camera lenses at the Magic Weekend in Edinburgh in May but they were conspicuous by their absence at the Giants’ Carnegie Challenge Cup semi-final.
They missed one of the great cup upsets as Huddersfield ended St Helens’ recent dominance of the competition with a stunning 24-14 win at Warrington’s Halliwell Jones Stadium.
The reason was a group holiday to Australia, where live TV coverage of the game was unavailable and Laura was kept informed by text messages from home in the early hours.
“The lads give me a bit of stick about this but it’s all good,” said Robinson. “Laura got all her mates involved and they just seem to have a good time and get on the beer. There’s about 10 of them now and they just come and sing and shout.
“Half of them are in Australia now but they already organising what T-shirts they are wearing for Wembley and planning the trip down. It’ll be a jolly girls’ outing for them.”
Robinson, 25, was one of a number of impressive Giants performers. The former Wigan half-back appears to have found his feet under new coach Nathan Brown at the Galpharm Stadium.
Robinson seemed destined for big things after breaking into the Wigan side as a teenager and playing in the 2003 Grand Final but he was discarded two years later.
He then joined a struggling Salford side but moved to Huddersfield after the Reds’ relegation in 2007. It is only since the arrival of Brown this season though that Robinson has truly started to blossom.
Huddersfield have enjoyed an outstanding campaign and, as well as having a Wembley trip to look forward to for the first time since 1962, they are riding high in third spot in Super League.
