Paul Sculthorpe: Challenge Cup is still a magic event

Aug 5 2009

by Paul Sculthorpe, Liverpool Echo

DON’T let anyone tell you the Cup has lost its magic.

Ask the players or fans from any of the four teams who are competing in this weekend’s Carnegie Challenge Cup semi-finals and they’ll tell you otherwise.

And I strongly suspect that fact will be reflected in the intensity of the games too.

Predicting the winners is no easy task.

Wigan against Warrington on Saturday at Stobart Stadium Halton should be a humdinger.

Wigan almost extended their unbeaten winning run in the engage Super League to six matches at Saints on Friday but were beaten at the death by Kyle Eastmond’s late try.

That looks like pretty good form to me.

Warrington have improved dramatically since the start of the season.

They very nearly beat Leeds at Headingley on Saturday and they’ve got real quality in their squad.

I suspect Warrington will fancy their chances of taking Wigan on up the middle.

With the likes of Adrian Morley, Garreth Carvell and the Anderson brothers, they’ve got some power in the pack. I’m finding this game almost impossible to call.

But I’d quite like to see my former club Warrington make it to Wembley, so I’m going to give them the nod.

Obviously, I’m looking to Saints to win the second semi at Warrington on Sunday.

But our opponents Huddersfield will be going into the game brimming with confidence.

They’re on a great winning run at the moment and the word from inside the Giants camp is the players are really responding to coach Nathan Brown.

We’re going to need all our big game experience.

It’s going to be one of those weekends which will be great for the neutral and those on the winning sides.

World Cup will be fine >>>
